OWCA x LiR

During May, the Learning in Residence (LiR) team worked with Wesley Alumni Relations to create a College first: a careers and networking opportunity for current boarders to engage with ‘OW Captains of Industry’ from a number of selected fields.

Our OW ‘Captains of Industry’: (L-R) Caroline Efron (OW2003), Charlie Dean (OW2019), Natalie Vogel (OW1998), Dori Kabillo (OW1989), Carla Fetter (OW1999), Dr Deb Morawetz (OW1998) and Cayman Deely (OW2017)

Our incredible line-up of guests included:

  • Caroline Efron (OW2003), Technology Strategist
  • Dori Kabillo (OW1989), Director of Nexus Psychology
  • Dr Deb Morawetz (OW1998), Paediatrician
  • Natalie Vogel (OW1998), Barrister
  • Carla Fetter (OW1999), Director at Jellis Craig Real Estate
  • Cayman Deely (OW2017), Structural Engineer
  • Charlie Dean (OW2019), Player, Collingwood Football Club

Sean Cox, Head of Learning in Residence, welcomed everyone to the communal Dining Hall for dinner before inviting our OWs to introduce themselves and share some of their fondest Wesley memories.

Our ‘Captains of Industry’ then broke into smaller groups to speak to students who were highly engaged and had obviously done their research, asking lots of pertinent questions about our OWs' experiences and the pathway they took to achieve success in their chosen fields.

‘It was great to chat to someone in the workforce who is specialised in their career, and learn how I can improve my soft skills, because I know they will be so important when I enter the workplace,’ said Forrest Lo (Year 11), from Hong Kong.

Amelie Shelley (Year 11) from Kerang, agreed: ‘I loved the variation of industry leaders, as it meant everyone could find someone to relate to.’

Our guest speakers also enjoyed the opportunity to be back on campus. ‘The event was really well organised, and the students were truly a great bunch!’ said Director of Nexus Psychology, Dori Kabillo (OW1989). ‘I felt a real connection and high level of engagement on our table and hope the students got a lot out of the experience.’

After such a successful evening, we have decided to run more collaborative events as part of the OWCA x LiR 'Pride Series'.
