OW Cricket

Another cricket season is upon us, and the Old Wesley Cricket Club is ready to hit the ground running. Last season was big for the club. Strong recruitment in the off season saw OWCC introduce a 2nd XI team into the fold for the very first time in its history.

Our 2nd XI was competitive all season and provided depth to the 1st XI when required. The club also worked closely with the school to enable the relocation of our primary home ground to the Front Turf of the St Kilda Road Campus. This season we are looking to make progress, grow the club further and get more people involved.

The OWCC inaugural committee has also been created with Branford Gruar (OW2012) selected as our fearless leader and President. This new committee signifies a gear shift for the OWCC towards long term club success, on and off the pitch. With the club in such great shape, there is no doubt that the season bodes well for the baggy purples. Having just missed out on finals last season, we are hungry for success.

For those interested in joining a team, we train on Thursday nights at 5:30pm on the Back Turf at the St Kilda Road Campus. This is followed by a pub meal on Chapel Street. Our matches are 40 overs per side, on Sunday afternoons (some Saturdays) at some of Melbourne’s premium turf grounds.

We welcome all abilities and commitment levels. We aim for success but the most important thing for us is to create a fun, inclusive club culture where everyone enjoys their cricket and each other’s company.

We are also very excited for the new year. In January 2024, 21 members of the OWCC family will be touring India, playing cricket on some of the best test wickets in the subcontinent.

The OWCC has strong ties with Mayo College in India and this tour follows a previous tour of India (2020) and reciprocal tours (in 2019 and 2022) where the OWCC hosted the Old Mayo team here in Australia. We can’t wait to strengthen those friendships and test our skills on the subcontinent next year.

If you are interested in joining the OWCC, contact our Head of Recruitment, Rick Morris (OW2004) on 0438 081 886. Rick was also appointed Captain for the upcoming season. Rick is a passionate and experienced cricketer who is looking forward to leading the team to success.
