Winter Sport 2026: A season of moments, momentum and community
Winter 2026 has been a season defined by memorable moments, outstanding performances and growing momentum across Wesley College sport. The inaugural APS Finals Series added excitement, with Wesley teams competing strongly across a wide range of programs.
Among the highlights were two marquee AFL night fixtures under lights at Harry Trott Oval ─ the home of Collegians ─ against Carey and Melbourne Grammar. Not only did Wesley record impressive victories in both contests, but the atmosphere was remarkable, with the Purple and Gold Army turning out in force. It is this passion, pride and spirit that make Wesley sport so special.
Our Girls’ First footballers also enjoyed a thrilling experience under lights at Mentone, emerging victorious in a nail-biting encounter that showcased the continued growth and excitement surrounding the AFLW competition. The team demonstrated tremendous resilience and determination throughout the season, reaching the semi-finals despite an injury-depleted line-up, representing the College with pride and distinction.
The football action did not stop there with our Boys' First Soccer team participating in the much-anticipated ‘Battle of the Bay’ under lights against Brighton Grammar. After a fantastic campaign, the team narrowly missed a place in the top four, but their commitment, skill and consistency throughout the season were first class.
Both of our First Hockey teams enjoyed exceptional seasons. The girls' team made enormous strides, progressing to the semi-finals with an unbeaten record before bowing out in a tightly fought contest. Their development throughout the year was outstanding and provides a strong platform for future success. The boys’ team also had an excellent season, narrowly missing a finals berth after competing strongly throughout the season.
A special mention must also go to our Boys' Basketball team who finished their season in third place after an outstanding season, which included victory at the Victorian Secondary Schools Challenge (VSSC) in Under 20 Boys' Division 1.

It was a heartbreaking end to the season for our Boys’ Cross Country team, which finished runners-up to Scotch College after nine consecutive years as Premiers. With both teams finishing with one loss each, Wesley fell just four points short on countback, a remarkable result for a team that has dominated the APS competition for almost a decade.
Our Girls’ Cross Country team finished in third place, a fantastic result for such a young team. A special mention to Chloe (Year 9, Glen Waverley Campus), who went undefeated across every race – a promising sign for the future.
Beyond results and ladders, the season has showcased perseverance, teamwork and pride at every level. My sincere thanks to our coaches, College Sport team, families and supporters, whose commitment enables more than 2,500 students to participate each week. Winter 2026 has been a wonderful season and we look forward with confidence and excitement to next year.
