At the end of the Summer sport season, Wesley College made history, securing the Firsts' Table Tennis premiership outright for the first time in APS history with a come-from-behind victory in the final match of the day, described by Principal Nick Evans (OW1985) as ‘the most intense game of sport I’ve seen in a very long time!'
Haileybury has been the dominant force in table tennis for over two decades, with the sole exception of 2024, when Wesley broke their winning streak and shared the premiership.
‘I couldn’t be prouder of our incredible squad and how they represented the College this year - you won’t find a more dedicated and passionate group of athletes in the APS,’ said Wesley Head of Table Tennis, Luke Bertucci.
‘The strength of the program and the bright future ahead are a testament to our amazing coaches - Nick, Matt, Eva, Gabby and Parleen, and their years of hard work. Special shoutout to Victoria for her outstanding leadership as Captain, who rose to every challenge that was thrown at her.’
Victoria has been part of the team since Year 5 and has played more First table tennis games than any other player in the College’s history. ‘This year, our team was at its strongest, not just in terms of skill, but in how well we worked together. It feels incredibly rewarding to achieve such an historic victory in my final year, and as Captain,’ said Victoria.
This win is a remarkable achievement for Wesley’s only co-educational, multi-generational First team, which is made up of brothers, sisters and a set of twins!
For Vice-Captain Nelson, partnering with his brother Michael was the advantage they needed to withstand four match points and win their doubles match, securing the premiership for Wesley 8-7. The feeling afterwards was ‘a combination of exuberance, euphoria and relief!’
‘Being in a co-ed team has taught me a lot about adaptability as our team has a diverse range of playing styles. I’ve also had to learn how to support and encourage our younger players who may not have had a lot of experience, but I know a team can be victorious regardless of their age,’ he said.
‘Leading a team with students of different ages and genders has helped build my confidence, both as a player and as a person,’ said Victoria. ‘The coaches and my teammates have always created a positive and encouraging environment, and it has been amazing to see the school provide greater recognition and support for table tennis, which has helped our performance tremendously.’
‘I hope this win gives the younger players a lot of confidence and will inspire more students to get involved. Wesley has a very strong table tennis program, and I know that with commitment and teamwork, great results are possible.’
We congratulate all the players, coaches and support staff involved in Wesley Table Tennis for embracing the ROAR sports values and taking the team one step further this year to achieve the ultimate result. We also acknowledge Haileybury for their incredible contribution to table tennis over the last two decades and for pushing us to raise the bar every time we compete.
All dynasties start with one win… bring on 2027!
