Art Exhibition and Wesley on Screen

An evening of the arts was held recently at the St Kilda Road Campus, featuring art, films, documentaries and music videos showcasing the spectrum of creativity at Wesley.

The 2023 Graduate Art Exhibition was a huge success with a full house of students, parents, friends, staff, and guests admiring the work of nearly 80 students from the St Kilda Road Campus. Students presented work from a range of subjects, including VCE Creative Art Practice, Visual Communication Design and Media and the IB Diploma Programme Visual Arts and Film subjects. The exhibition’s opening event was followed by Wesley on Screen.

The artworks on display in the exhibition were the fruits of students’ dedication and countless hours spent exploring their inner landscapes. From bold and avant-garde experiments to traditional and timeless classics, the array of styles and mediums mirrored the diversity of our students' talents and perspectives.

Guest judge of the Acquisitive Art Prize, visual artist Martin King, was highly impressed by the calibre of work on display. He commended the work of seven students, and ultimately awarded the prize to Kit, Year 12. Kit’s immersive installation of a street wall with paste up poster and a dog sculpture will be acquired by the College.

Still from Bailey's film

A film by Bailey, Year 12, was awarded the Media Acquisition and Brielle Hammond’s work was awarded the Visual Communication Design Acquisition.

Following the exhibition opening, guests moved to Adamson Hall for 'Wesley on Screen', a showcase of films, documentaries, music videos and animations by Year 10 and IB Film and VCE Media students. A large gathering of students, parents and staff were in attendance, coming together as a supportive and enthusiastic audience for the screening of this collection of student work. This year's show reel demonstrated the great diversity of our cohort, with a wide variety of media forms and styles represented. The subject matter was undoubtedly close to home, with films exploring the teenage experience, and our students clearing embodying ‘how to be’ in this dynamic, changing, and sometimes confronting, world.

'Walking through the exhibition spaces or being in the audience at Wesley on Screen, you could appreciate the profound impact that arts education has on our students. It fosters resilience, encourages innovation, and teaches them that there is beauty to be found in the process of creation, not just in the finished product,' Amelia Judd, Head of the Arts Faculty, said.
