Prep at Wesley: Setting strong foundations for life-long learning and growth

The first year of school is a momentous occasion. It’s the start of an educational journey and in those first early years of primary or Junior School, children develop the skills and attitudes they need to become learners for life.

So, what do early learners learn at a private school like Wesley College?

Step inside the Prep classroom at Wesley College Elsternwick and you’ll see young learners exploring the world around them through inquiry-based learning. Our carefully crafted units of inquiry present our youngest learners with countless opportunities to gain a strong understanding of the world they live in, as well as their individual and collective responsibilities.

From 3-year-old ECLC to Year 6, students learn within the framework of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (IB PYP), which provides a strong academic foundation and seeks to prepare students to become curious, self-motivated and inquiring learners.

Wesley is one of the few to apply the globally recognised IB framework from Junior School all the way through to Senior School. This provides  a continuum of learning as your child progresses through their educational journey.

A life-long love of learning begins with mastering the basics

Early mastery of literacy and numeracy is fundamental to developing a life-long love of learning and academic achievement. At Wesley, our comprehensive phonics-based literacy program, Soundswrite, establishes a strong foundation for reading and writing. In  our Prep classes, students investigate the relationship between sounds of words and letters as a whole class, then consolidate their learning in small groups. Learning is therefore tailored to each student's level of understanding.

Daily numeracy lessons are hands-on and provide our students with many opportunities to develop these core skills. Led by our highly skilled teachers with a targeted focus, our students interact with materials, manipulate numbers and collaborate with one another to deepen their understanding of the mathematical world.
