The inter-school Kimberley Cup sports competition enables Yiramalay students to interact with other students from across the Kimberley with a focus on sportsmanship and having fun

Yiramalay students joined with peers from schools across the Kimberley to compete in football, soccer, basketball, netball and volleyball – and have fun – at the Kimberley Cup in Broome.

Students from the Yiramalay/Wesley Studio School travelled to Broome for the Kimberley Cup in July. The Yiramalay students joined with peers from schools in Broome, Derby, Kununurra, Halls Creek, Wyndham, Looma, La Grange, One Arm Point and the King Leopold Ranges for the inter-school sports ‘Smarter than Smoking’ Kimberley Cup at the Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre in July.

As Carly Laden reported in the Broom Advertiser, Yiramalay, Kununurra District High School, Broome Senior High School and St Mary’s College dominated the inter-school sports tournament.

Yiramalay won Mixed Basketball and defended its 2018 Boys AFL win in the grand final. Kununurra DHS took out Netball Division 1, Boys Volleyball and Boys Soccer. Broome SHS won Girls AFLX, Girls Division 2 Netball, Mixed Netball and Mixed Soccer. St Mary‘s College took out Girls Volleyball, Mixed Volleyball and Girls Soccer. Derby District High School won Boys Basketball Division 1. Halls Creek won Girls Basketball Division 2.

According to Yiramalay’s Induction Coordinator, Tegan Gluschenko, there are many benefits for students in participating in the Kimberley Cup. ‘It provides the opportunity for the Yiramalay students to represent their school in sport which doesn’t get to happen very often,’ Tegan says. ‘The students have such natural talent across a range of sports and the Kimberley Cup really showcases their abilities.

‘The inter-school sports competition also enables the students to interact with other students from across the Kimberley with a focus on sportsmanship and having fun. We have really enjoyed being a part of the Kimberley Cup and are looking forward to 2020 when we compete again!’
