Strong in defence and attack: the Netball Firsts – Premiers and undefeated all season

Wesley Sport has had a very successful Winter season, winning four Premierships from a possible 11, as Jesse McInnes, College Head of Sport, reports.

In Cross Country, the Boys team won their final round to secure the Premiership for the fourth year in a row, shared with arch rivals Haileybury and St Kevin’s College. The Girls team went into the final round with an unassailable lead on points winning their round emphatically and finishing the season undefeated for an incredible eighth Premiership in a row.

In Netball, the Firsts defeated Geelong Grammar School. With Wesley undefeated all season and top of the ladder and Geelong in second, the match was effectively a Grand Final. Playing with incredible intensity, the Girls clinched a very well-deserved Premiership with a scoreline of 50 to 48.

In Hockey, the Boys Firsts team, which had already secured the Premiership in the penultimate round, played out the season in a tightly contested match with Scotch College, second on the ladder. With Wesley fielding a depleted side with four players out after a tough match the week prior against Carey, the Boys fought hard to maintain their unbeaten record in the final match of the season, in which Scotch took the honours with a score line of 0 to 1.

In Soccer, the Girls Firsts were tied on points with Carey Grammar School, each with 10 wins and one loss going into the final round. With the match another effective Grand Final, the Girls pressed hard and threw everything at their opponents, ending the match down 0 to 3 but proud of a fantastic effort this season.

For any school to secure a Premiership this season is a great achievement. With four Premierships teams and one breathing down the necks of the eventual Premiers, we are immensely proud.

We’re also proud of every team and every athlete. Thank you to all athletes and coaches this Winter season. Our coaches’ efforts and support for our athletes, and the hard work and commitment of our athletes, and their ever-supportive parents, is deeply appreciated.
