Young achievers get a head start to University life

Wesley College is proud to have two students in the prestigious Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program at the University of Melbourne this year. Lia Jung has been selected from our St Kilda Road campus and David Huang from our Glen Waverley campus, opening up their opportunities to experience university life while they are still in Year 12.

“Being a Young Scholar for me is a symbol of the abundance of opportunities we have in Victoria for students who strive beyond what’s required of them” Lia says.

David says, “Becoming a Young Scholar is a recognition of my efforts and ability. It motivates me to work harder in my schoolwork and achieve my goals.”

The program of events include leadership seminars, VCE revision lectures, the opportunity to stay overnight at one of the University’s residential colleges, an invitation to the High Achievers Lounge and a celebration evening at the end of 2017.

David is looking forward to the University’s library access, saying, “We can borrow books from any library at the University of Melbourne, which will allow me to discover more about what I am going to learn in the future.”

Lia says, “I’m particularly interested in the overnight adventures at the campus to get a taste of University life and meet new people.”

Professor Kwong Lee Dow OAM is a former university Vice-Chancellor and a distinguished scholar, who plays an active role in supporting the program. Each Young Scholar is guaranteed a place at The University of Melbourne in the areas of Arts, Biomedicine, Commerce, Design or Science, if they achieve an ATAR of 95 or above in Year 12.

The program commenced in 2007 and has given over 7,000 students an insight into undergraduate life at The University of Melbourne while they are still in high school.

David has aspirations to study biomedicine at university after completing Year 12, while Lia would like to complete a double degree in history and literature, and she is also eager to pursue law and journalism.
