Laura Harding 2017 Youth Sailing Championships

Glen Waverley student Laura Harding and her crew (Ella Grimshaw) was successful in coming 5thoverall in the Australian Youth Sailing Championships in the 420 division and winning the female division. “It was such an amazing and life changing experience as so many opportunities have arisen from it. It really was a shock to the system as it has always been a goal to win the female division however I didn’t know what it would really be like.”

Subsequently Laura and her crew are 2 out of 14 people who qualify for the 2017 Australian Youth Sailing Team. “This involves us travelling overseas and interstate for regattas and training camps in the lead up to the 2017 Youth World Championships.”

Having started sailing at 8 years old, Laura says, “…the sailing genes run in the family”. She now balances her sailing commitments with her studies at Wesley. “We train about 3 times a week on water and off water (in the gym and other things like running) around 2-4 times a week. I try and plan my school work around my set training times to try and ensure that I can get everything completed to my standard.”

Laura hopes to go far in the sport and says, “One of my main goals for the future is definitely to compete in the Olympics”.
