Year 12 student Lachlan Wilson has won a place in the 2015 International Science Olympiads. In July, he will join seventeen of Australia’s brightest student biologists, chemists, physicists and earth scientists to represent Australia at the UNESCO-sanctioned International Science Olympiads in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Olympiad is a 10 hour competition comprising of a five hour chemistry examination (theoretical), followed by a five hour practical examination. Each student in the team competes individually in the competition.

Following a year of exams and intensive training, Lachlan succeeded against 3,914 other high achieving science students in the qualifying exams, before attending two preparation programs at the Australian National University in Canberra.

Lachlan loved his time spent at the Australian National University, he says “we worked hard from 8.30am to 10.30pm every day. We explored many different areas of chemistry, some of which I had never studied before. It was university level chemistry so it was very challenging”.

The next step for Lachlan is travelling to England where he and his three chemistry team mates will spend one week at Cambridge University training alongside the UK Chemistry Olympiad Team. From Cambridge, he will fly to Baku, Azerbaijan, to test his chemistry skills against the best students in the world.

Lachlan says he is excited to represent Australia in the Olympiad, and he is looking forward to travelling to England and Azerbaijan, as he has never been overseas before.

Wesley is delighted to acknowledge Lachlan’s success and wishes him all the very best with the Olympiad in Azerbaijan.
