Promoting social change

Glen Waverley Year 11 student, Peter Sun (pictured above on right), has been selected as a founding member of the Pinewood Community Bank Young Leaders’ Board. Peter will come together with a group of high achieving senior students from schools across Monash, with the aim of contributing to the local community by identifying important youth issues and promoting social change. The board identified mental health as a top concern for young people, and their first project, Project Echo, is campaigning for a Headspace youth mental hub to open in the City of Monash.

To launch the project, Peter and members of the Young Leaders’ Board are holding a concert to raise awareness for youth mental health, and to coincide with World Mental Health Day on Friday 10 October at Glen Waverley Secondary College at 7.00pm.

The exciting music event will feature top acts from local high schools, including the Wesley College Soul Band, and Australian hip hop artist Dylan Joel, and Joel Watson from the X-Factor. Peter hopes that “if enough voices can echo the important issue of youth mental health, we can translate the momentum from the concert into actions that will benefit our community”.

Being involved with the project has been a really positive experience for Peter and what he enjoys most is the opportunity to empower young people, and “take direct action to give back something meaningful to the community”.

Wesley College congratulates Peter on his selection as a board member and his wonderful initiatives and we hope that there is strong community support for the Project Echo concert on Friday 10 October.
