Outstanding snowsports achievement

Glen Waverley Year 8 student Georgia Von Einem has performed wonderfully well in the 2014 snow season, and was recently awarded the Bernd Greber Cup for Outstanding Achievement in alpine skiing. The 14-year-old has been skiing since she was just 5 years old, her family loves the snow and Georgia’s aunt, Emily Bamford, represented Australia at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Georgia’s first race was the Wesley Cup when she was just eight years old. She started skiing for Wesley at interschool competitions when she was in Year 2, and she currently splits her time between the Mt Buller Race Club and the Wesley team.

Training with the Mt Buller Race Club involves living at Mt Buller full-time during Term 3 and training for two months at Winter Park, Colorado, during the northern hemisphere winter.

Georgia says she loves the rush that comes with speed skiing. Her favourite events are Super G and GS because they are the fastest. She has made some great friends through the Mt Buller Race Club and “loves getting the opportunity to visit different mountains to race”.

Georgia dominated the Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships, finishing first in Alpine GS, first in SkierX and fourth in Moguls in Division 3 Girls (Years 7 – 8). As a result of this, Georgia qualified for the Australian Interschool Snowsports Championships, where she came second in SkierX and had the fastest time in the Alpine GS, before missing her second run. Georgia was placed third overall in the under 14 division at the Australian Championships. She considers this to be her greatest sporting achievement because it was her first time competing at this competition and it challenged her to race the top skiers in Australia.

Georgia was thrilled to win the Bernd Greber Cup and she says it was very special to be acknowledged out of all the students between Years 7 and 12.

Now that the snow season is over in Australia, Georgia is looking forward to travelling to Colorado in December. She says she hopes to one day be the number one skier in Australia and continue to race on different mountains all over the world.

Wesley College congratulates Georgia on her achievement.
