Sarah soars to first place

Sarah Melsom, a Glen Waverley Year 7 student, has recently won first place at the International Development Program (IDP) National Club Gymnastics Championships. This competition is held over two days in Geelong, where the best up and coming gymnasts in Australia compete in vault, bar, beam and floor. Sarah came from third place on day 1, to take out first place overall.

Gymnastics has been a part of Sarah’s life since she was just three years old, when she was invited to join the IDP pre squad at the end of kinder gym. She currently represents Waverley Gymnastics Centre, and has represented Victoria nationally, which she says was a great honour.

Sarah soars to first place

Sarah loves competing, and considers it an opportunity to demonstrate the skills and routines that she has honed in her intensive weekly training. This is a commitment that requires close to 30 hours a week of the 12 year olds time.

It takes a lot of hard work, but Sarah manages to stay on top of her school work with the support of Wesley’s “absolutely wonderful and encouraging” teaching staff.

Sarah’s idol is a former Waverley Gymnastics Centre buddy, Georgi Bonora, who represented Australia at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. Sarah also hopes to make it to the Olympics one day, and has already set her sights on Tokyo in 2020.

Wesley congratulates Sarah, and looks forward to seeing what lies ahead for the talented gymnast.
