Supporting those in need

Glen Waverley Year 9 students have been volunteering at FareShare, as part of the Marvellous Melbourne program. The not-for-profit organisation provides nutritious and tasty meals to those in need, by rescuing unwanted food from supermarkets, farmers and markets. During their visit, the students helped prepare and package meals, and learnt valuable lessons about food waste and the plight of those who struggle to get access to even just one meal a day.

It was evident to the students and the staff with them, that some vital food stocks were low, so this term’s casual clothes day at the Glen Waverley campus, run by the Culture and Traditions team, will see funds go toward buying rice and other staples, in bulk, for FareShare.

Sheriden Vella, Head of Middle School at Glen Waverley has praised the students’ efforts saying, “We hope the compassion and empathy they are displaying now stays with them long into adulthood. Our students are future leaders of our country, so the more they recognise the need for philanthropy and supporting those who need help, the brighter their future will be.”

Wesley encourages our students to continue to think (and act) locally, nationally and globally.
