The Importance of Performance

It has been wonderful this term to be able to see and hear gatherings of students at school. That joy and happiness has been reflected in the range of music-making in the Music School and is such a contrast to the COVID-restricted environment that dominated much of the past two years.

This week we enjoyed live audiences at our two Music Soirees in Fitchett Hall. It was the final time that the 2021 Middle School Music Captains were hosts. Mareli Opperman, Walter Liang and Alexa Chan have been enthusiastic in their term of Music leadership and I am grateful for the many recordings they made last year for the series of virtual music soirees that were created.  Pictures from the Music Soirees will be posted to the WiSE Music page. Mareli Opperman’s suggestion of forming a Year 8 String Quartet to play at the recent International Women’s Day breakfast came to fruition, much to the delight of the guests who enjoyed the entertainment.

Year 7 Chapel

Walter Liang performed Sir Edward Elgar’s Chanson de Matin on the violin as part of the Wesley College Year 7 Chapel service at the Wesley Church, Lonsdale Street. The music resonated in the fine acoustic and it was a delightful contribution to the service.

Music Day

On Wednesday last week we celebrated Music Day, where our music ensembles were allocated time in Fitchett Hall to record items for broadcasting in assemblies and to be posted onto WiSE for our community.

Concert Band Afternoon

On Wednesday 6 April, the Concert Band will be attending a Combined Band Afternoon at the Glen Waverley campus. This will be the first time that concert bands from the three campuses will have come together and is something that band directors from all the campuses have been planning with enthusiasm. More details should have reached parents vie Operoo, but please direct any questions to alexandra.cameron@wesleycollege.edu.au

Shrek the Musical

Rehearsals for the Middle School Production of Shrek the Musical have now commenced and we look forward with great delight to these early rehearsals where we start to see the characters come to life. There is information regularly posted to the Shrek WiSE page as well as posted on the noticeboard in the Music School foyer.

Victoria by the Park

Music students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are planning to entertain the residents of local aged care facility, Victoria by the Park, with a music soiree from 3.00pm on Monday 28 March. This was an initiative from Year 8 student Mareli Opperman. Information should have reached parents via Operoo; please direct any questions to alexandra.cameron@wesleycollege.edu.au
