The Royal Flying Doctor Service ‘landed’ at the Elsternwick Campus in Term 1 to the great excitement of Year 1 students, 'flying in' to help celebrate the learning they’d been doing in their ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ unit of inquiry, which focused on the essential services that support communities.
A simulator plane instantly transformed the learning space into a mini airbase, with students eagerly dressing up as pilots and doctors to explore the medical and aviation equipment on board and taking turns to ‘fly’ the aircraft using the interactive controls. Students were fascinated to learn how people living in remote areas can be hours away from shops, hospitals and other vital services.
They discovered how the RFDS plays a crucial role in delivering medical care, flying doctors and nurses to those in need – no matter how far away they are.
Sebby was excited by the whole experience. ‘I liked flying the plane because I felt like a real pilot helping people!’ he said.
Ariana furiously agreed, saying, ‘When I grow up, I want to be a Royal Flying Doctor!’
