Celebrating legacy, leadership and lifelong bonds
Held in the days following the Head of the River, the Boat Race Dinner remains a cherished Wesley tradition. It is a night steeped in legacy, camaraderie and celebration of our vibrant rowing community across generations.

The 2025 dinner drew a full and enthusiastic crowd of alumni, students, parents and coaches. It was a lively evening marked by genuine connection, shared memories and plenty of conversation - a reflection of the strong community that continues to surround Wesley rowing.
This year also saw the welcome return of the traditional song Bow, You're Hurrying, adding a touch of nostalgia and unity to the evening’s program.
Guests enjoyed heartfelt toasts from Simon McCloskey (OW2004) and Cath Thomas (McArthur) (OW1996), each offering their reflections on the friendships, values and life lessons formed through rowing at Wesley and honouring rowing parents and coaches.
Captains of Boats 2024 Caitlin Woods (OW2024) and Hunter Issacs (OW2024) offered a toast to current crews and they responded with a vote of thanks to the community and an update on their season.
A standout moment of the evening was a special conversation between dual Olympian and former Australian rower Frank Hegerty OLY and Wesley’s Head Coach of Rowing, Matt Ryan.
He spoke candidly about his personal battle with lymphoma, highlighting the importance of resilience and the support of the rowing community during challenging times. His story served as a powerful reminder of the strength found in both sport and community.
Another highlight of the night was the presentation of the Paul Guest Medal - an award given to a current first crew rower who has demonstrated exceptional inspiration, leadership and humility.
Named in honour of Paul Guest (OW1957) - Olympian and lifelong champion of rowing - the medal was first awarded in 2020 and recognises not just athletic ability, but the character and spirit that elevate a crew and leave a legacy.
Voted by the current First VIII crews, this year’s medal was presented by Principal Nick Evans (OW1985) to Tom (Year 12, Glen Waverley Campus), a rower widely respected for his integrity, work ethic and leadership, both on and off the water.
A major talking point on the night was the unveiling of the Generational Seat photo series - a moving visual tribute to Wesley rowers across the decades. Alumni were photographed in the seat they once rowed, grouped by position, creating a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of the sport.
Each image captured stories of challenge, triumph and the shared identity of those who’ve sat in the same seats - years apart, yet with a shared experience.
Adding a unique and generous touch to the evening, an auction was held for a beautifully crafted rowing boat coffee table. The proceeds will go towards supporting the Wesley Rowing Parents Support Group and ensuring the ongoing success of the Boat Race Dinner for years to come.
The 2025 Boat Race Dinner was more than a celebration - it was a living expression of Wesley’s rowing legacy: bold, enduring and deeply human. With traditions honoured, stories shared and future leaders recognised, the spirit of Wesley rowing continues to inspire and connect generations.
