The 2024/25 season has been one of the most memorable in recent history for Old Wesley Cricket Club. After years of re-building, the club is now reaping the rewards, in both on-field success and a growing sense of community. Strong recruitment saw the First and Second XI teams thrive, with a mix of OWs, fathers, sons, new faces and returning favourites. At its core, the club remains inclusive and family-friendly, united by a shared love of the game.

For the Second XI, the season was a rollercoaster, but under the leadership of newly appointed skipper James Dowland (OW2017), the team found its rhythm. Competing in Division 4 of the MCC competition, they built a solid core group of players who will no doubt be a force to be reckoned with next season. Maxy Shah finished as the side’s top batsman with 156 runs, while Dowland himself led the bowling with 11 wickets. Jack Poulos (OW2020) made his mark in the field, taking six catches across the season.
Meanwhile, the First XI went from strength to strength, not only expanding their squad but consistently delivering quality cricket. All the hard work culminated in a Division 2 Premiership victory with the grand final win being played on the St Kilda Road Front Turf. It was victory made all the better by the support of the OWCC fans, friends and family who came down to watch. Wade King was the standout batsman of the season, racking up an extraordinary 770 runs – 360 runs clear of second place, as well as a Man of the Match medal for the Grand Final. Rick Morris (OW2004) led the bowling attack with 17 wickets for the season, as well as captaining the team.

Beyond individual performances, the club recognised several standout contributions. Matthew Grant claimed the Golden Goose award for an unfortunate two torn hamstrings in one game, while Noah Martine was named Best Young Player after his outstanding 6/8 in Round 3. The Best on Ground award, sponsored by DSC, went to Khush Shah for his contributions throughout the season.
A club is more than just its players, and none of this would be possible without the incredible support behind the scenes. A special thank you goes to Breanna for her work in growing the club’s social media presence - something that will only continue to expand. The unwavering support of families like the Wilsons, Martines, Shahs, Kangs, Kings and Harbos is deeply appreciated, as is the dedication of Mr Robbie (Rob Savedra) (OW1985), the club’s beloved groundsman, whose efforts in preparing wickets - sometimes for two teams at once - never go unnoticed.
The committee has been crucial to the club’s success. Rick Morris (OW2004) provided exceptional leadership while managing the finances. Ben Symon (OW2012) ensured the club’s interests were met while organising everything from presentation nights to semi-final BBQs. James Dowland expertly handled administration, proving his value both on and off the field. Despite being injured all season, Kyle Clarkson remained a key support through coaching and technical advice. Ollie Browning (OW2011) was a true clubman, stepping up wherever needed, playing across teams, managing tough conversations and handling the covers. Huge thanks to the whole committee for a fantastic year.
As the season ends, it’s clear something special is building at Old Wesley Cricket Club. With strong foundations, a thriving team and a growing culture, the Lions have momentum - and a Premiership - to build on. Bring on next season!
Bran Gruar (OW2012)
