Talent plus opportunity equals success for Jent Jiang

Meet Jent Jiang, a talented photographer, actor, filmmaker and Year 11 IBDP student currently undertaking Year 1 of IBDP Visual Art at our Glen Waverley Campus. Recently selected to join the National Gallery of Victoria’s Teen Council for 2022, Jent has made the most of his time at school and is a wonderful example to all international students of how embracing life at Wesley can be a positive and rewarding experience.

‘One of the main reasons I chose to come to Wesley from China was to learn more about Art, as many schools where I had previously studied didn’t offer much,’ said Jent. ‘At Wesley, the curriculum encourages students to embody their creative expression and supports their journey in the arts beyond school. The school also provides ways for students to learn and explore art in its various forms such as sculpture, textiles, photography, drawing, print making and painting.’

Jent started his journey at Wesley in October 2019 through the English Language Preparation Program (ELPP), Wesley’s in-house intensive English program designed for international and local students in Years 7 – 10.

‘Jent has shown great strength of character and determination to learn all about Australian culture and master the English language,’ said Natalie Siritzky, International Students Coordinator at Wesley. ‘He has shown remarkable resilience over the last two years and has made the most of all the opportunities that Wesley offers.’

In Year 10, Jent attended Mallana Camp and achieved an Acquisitive Art prize. He is a keen photographer and filmmaker, so passionate that he has set up a film club at the Glen Waverley Campus and already has several keen members. Jent is also a member of the International Relations Club who run activities aimed at fostering tolerance and understanding of all races, cultures and religions.

National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) Teen Council 2022

Adding to his multiple accolades, Jent has recently been selected to join the NGV Teen Council for 2022. His role involves helping museum staff behind the scenes to design, coordinate and promote NGV programs for teens.

‘I didn’t think I would get in as it is a very popular program and there’s only a small number of positions every year,’ explained Jent.  ‘But I applied and the rest is history. I am really looking forward to getting involved in designing the upcoming exhibitions. The program lasts for a whole year so I will be able to see and participate in all of the 2022 NGV shows and learn from some of their artists.’

Passionate about filmmaking and photography, Jent dreams of becoming a movie director and plans to pursue a Film and Television major at New York University. Watch this space!
