At Wesley, music is more than a subject - it’s a powerful force for lifelong learning. Music strengthens cognitive development by encouraging pattern recognition, critical thinking and sustained focus. It’s a true workout for the brain.
Music also nurtures creativity, builds confidence, strengthens resilience and fosters collaboration and discipline. These aren’t just musical skills - they’re essential life skills that support learning across all areas and stay with students long after the final note is played.
These skills were on full display at the end of Term 2 as students from the Elsternwick Campus took to the stage to showcase their musicality in two very different concerts.
Music Makers Concert
Students from Years 5 to 8 proudly took to the stage at the Music Makers Concert to showcase their progress in the Instrumental Music Program (IMP).
The concert opened with confident performances by our Year 5 band and string ensembles, who then joined the audience as the Year 6 to 8 class ensembles took the stage. The evening culminated in a dynamic and uplifting performance of Sonoran Sunrise by Brian Balmages by our talented Year 8 Band, a fitting finale that captured the spirit of the evening.
Winter Ensembles Concert
The Winter Ensembles Concert was a vibrant celebration of student talent, bringing together a rich tapestry of musical styles and eras. Highlights included a powerful rendition of 21 Guns by Arts Captain Dylan and Shala and a captivating solo performance of Svendsen’s Romance, Op. 26 by Cally on the violin.
The Male Voice Ensemble and Marimba Trio offered fresh interpretations of contemporary works, Reyansh wowed with a dynamic drum solo and our Middle School Choir closed the night with a moving performance of Adiemus and Vivaldi’s Gloria.
Music is a journey, and like all the best journeys, it’s even better when shared. Both concerts are a testament to this spirit, and we congratulate all students involved on their fantastic performances and dedication throughout the term. We look forward to seeing where their musical journeys take them next.
