Home visits build strong foundations for our youngest learners

What do trampolines, princesses and robots have to do with starting a new school year?

As part of the 3 and 4 year old Early Childhood Learning Centre (ECLC)  transition program, ECLC educators from Wesley’s St Kilda Road Campus visit homes of students and their families early in the school year. Jumping on trampolines, twirling like princesses, and meeting beloved robot toys were just some of the memorable ways our educators connected with children in their own environments.

Beyond the fun, these visits offer invaluable insights into each child’s interests, routines and family life, helping to build strong partnerships between parents and educators. They also lay the groundwork for a smooth transition into the classroom, ensuring each child feels seen, supported and excited to learn.

‘Home visits are the first step towards creating a more positive and trusting relationship with families,’ said ECLC Co-educator Richard Bates.

‘When we visit a student’s home, not only does the child become the teacher, but we gain valuable insight into a family’s dynamic, cultural background and any potential challenges that may impact their child’s learning. These visits also give us an opportunity to discuss expectations, learning strategies and ways that learning can be supported at home.’

At Wesley College, we know that strong partnerships between home and school are vital to every child’s success. This year’s home visits have once again proven just how powerful those early connections can be, offering a unique opportunity for teachers, students and parents to connect in a relaxed and familiar environment, laying the foundations for strong communication and support throughout the year.

'I was so excited to have Miss Le Tiss and Miss Pang visit my house,’ said Ezra, who started in Wesley’s 4-year-old ECLC this year. ‘My favourite part was taking photos together and showing them my robot. I loved it.’

‘Luna was absolutely thrilled to welcome her teachers into her world, proudly showing them around with so much excitement and joy,’ said parents, Elizabeth and Clive, after their home visit. ‘Seeing the confidence and happiness Luna showed was truly heart-warming.’
