Connecting to country with Shelley Ware

Shelley speaks to Year 7 students

Year 7 students at the Elsternwick Campus were fortunate to hear about the experiences of Shelley Ware as an Aboriginal Australian at a recent incursion.

Shelley is an educator, TV and radio presenter and journalist, well known for her groundbreaking NITV-SBS football program Marngrook and host of web shows Colour of Your Jumper and Ware2Now?

Shelley attended the Year 7 Language and Literature classes to share her knowledge and personal experiences. As Shelley explained to students, culture, history and community play an important role in who we are as individuals. Like many Indigenous people, her family’s own history and relationship with colonial settlers has resulted in intergenerational trauma that has affected many.

Her experiences were enlightening for students, as they heard about the personal impact of the Stolen Generation, colonisation and racism, and how Indigenous Australian people are still healing from the impact today.
