Keeping in Touch

How is Wesley maintaining student wellbeing during remote learning? By applying the same principles of our in-class pastoral care to the remote setting – know our students as individuals and keep communication lines open.

When we are required to move to remote learning as part of our pandemic restrictions, the continued wellbeing of Wesley’s students remains one of our top focuses.

Maintaining the same principles as our in-class pastoral care, teachers have dedicated time for ‘keeping in touch’ with their students online.

In small groups, students meet with their teachers online during ‘Keeping in Touch (KiT)’ meetings. The meetings are a dedicated time to check in on student wellbeing, provide support and help maintain a connection to each other and the school.

Recently, students returned to remote learning and KiT meetings. The informal aspect of KiT seems to be what students enjoy, and the time spent talking about the things the students want to talk about.

In the Junior School, conversations have ranged from what their families have been doing together, what kinds of things they have enjoyed learning, how students are feeling and what they are most missing about being at school. They’re light-hearted chats which show our students’ agility and resilience. They are keen to interact with one another in a way that remote learning makes challenging, but they’re making the most of a difficult situation.

Pastoral care has been our main priority during remote learning, particularly as students face more extended periods of remote learning, and our KiT groups have supported the school’s opportunities to check in on the wellbeing of each and every child.
