The Witches

Students from Years 7 to 9 took part in the Middle School play, The Witches, adapted from the book of the same name by Roald Dahl. The Witches tells the story of a boy and his grandmother who run into some trouble with the witches of England, and it involves the turning of boys into mice, a poor chef with a mouse in her knickers, and some poisoned (but otherwise delicious) green pea soup.

'After months of rehearsals, we were performance ready, with lines memorised, characters refined by adopting different accents, or taking on the characteristics of other creatures altogether! It was great to see so many talented Middle School students on stage and give performing a go – regardless of how big, small or ridiculous their part was! We worked on our energy in delivery, pacing, working as a team and many other things that helped us to put on three great shows. We also made connections with students from other year levels and became friends with people we might otherwise not have met. It was such a fun time and a good way to get involved in the Wesley Performing Arts community.

Apart from the cast and the directors, there were many people who also worked hard to help us put on a show that we couldn’t have been more proud of. On behalf of The Witches cast, we’d like to thank everyone who was involved in making the show what it was. Our hair, make-up and costumes made us look incredible and the set was amazing. We were equally grateful for those responsible for the lighting, sound and music, so thank you! We had a lot of fun doing this production, and encourage everyone to audition for the musical this year. Every production is an unforgettable opportunity, and great fun. You won’t regret it!'

'Rehearsals for The Witches were always a highlight as everyone was very enthusiastic about performing on stage. This positive energy drove every rehearsal and was one of the reasons we were able to get through it. Everyone was very supportive and keen which made rehearsals that much more fun – even when you weren’t on stage as you were able to see your friends performing.

Before anyone knew it, performances were coming up. We each received our amazing costumes, which made us feel even more in character. Once we had our incredible set and we were doing our tech and dress rehearsals, we were well on the way to a great show! When performances came around, everyone was buzzing with excitement, even our friends and families who wanted to see it – so much so that every night was booked out!

Performances were so fun as everyone loved it. Overall, The Witches set a high standard for Middle School plays. It was great fun to be in it, and I would recommend anyone to audition as it is a great experience.'
