The Makerspace is a learning environment that is designed for hands-on STEM learning, where students explore different digital technology gadgets and resources such as LEGO robotics, circuits and augmented reality. Students learn coding skills and try new apps and tools available on their iPad. As well as digital skills, there are lots of opportunities to be creative with craft and construction materials, as well as LEGO kits.

Please enjoy the following reflections compiled by our Years 2, 3 and 4 students about their experiences in the Makerspace:

Year 2

In Year 2, we have been to the Makerspace a couple of times this year. When we have been in there, we have used things such as Beebots, Cubetto, playdough and sticks, as well as Lego that uses screwdrivers for construction.

Year 2 students created a microphone using aluminium foil and a soft ball, along with a toilet roll. We now use this microphone in the classroom for the ‘caring and open-minded detective’ to explain to the class who has shown these attributes.

Another one of our favourite activities has been the Cubetto, which helps us to better understand the coding that is used in Minecraft. We can direct the Cubetto on a board to follow a set of instructions.

Year 3

In Year 3, we have been lucky enough to go to the Makerspace a number of times. When we have gone to the Makerspace, we have looked at things such as Merge cube, Lego and Little Bits’ circuits.

One of our favourite activities has been Merge cube because by scanning the cube, we get to learn more about the world around us, such as the solar system and human body.

We have also enjoyed using the Little Bits’ circuits because we have made fans and speakers that work by connecting them to a power source.

Year 4

Year 4 have visited the Maker space numerous times. Our favourite activity has been to work with Lego. When working with Lego, we connect to an app on our iPad. We build the Lego by reading the instructions provided on the app. When we are finished building the Lego, we can connect the construction to the iPad to enhance the experience. For example, we connected a Lego construction of a windmill to the app so that we could make the arms of the windmill move.
